Association of Professional Standards for Asset Surveying launches

A new professional association for the built environment has launched with the creation of the Association of Professional Standards for Asset Surveying (APSAS).

The vision of the new association includes the aim ”to improve both the quality of asset surveying and to provide a clearly defined and supported career pathway for existing and potential new entrants into the profession.”

The new association has been the result of an asset surveying industry-wide collaboration, including the holding of several roundtable briefing events with a cross section of industry professionals, as well as guidance from the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) and the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM).

APSAS has been created by Matthew Steptoe of TSA Surveying, Mark Spilling of Assets55, Karl Horner of Mobiess and Mark Whittaker and Vanessa Mason of Thomson FM. Several companies in the field of asset surveying, such as Mitie, Bellrock, Troup Bywaters & Anders and Rider Levett Bucknall have already become founding members of APSAS.

The purpose of the new association is threefold:

  • Competence: To create clearly defined and agreed levels of professional competence at the basic, intermediate and advanced levels across the profession
  • Progression : To create a career pathway for the training and assessment of asset surveyors
  • Attraction: To encourage and retain new entrants into the profession, with established levels of knowledge and skills to be attained, through defined training and practical experience

As well as corporate membership, individual membership is being offered for the different competency levels. As part of the membership offering the Association will provide members a newly created technical training manual, with the aim to then develop the provision of online training courses.

Anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a member of APSAS and the career development and training opportunities available, should contact the team at info@apsas.co.uk.
