While modern-day health and safety risks, from finding enough first aiders among a hybrid workplace to preventing fires caused by e-bikes and e-scooters were discussed at the recent FMJ/Watco webinar, the expert panel agreed that slips, trips and falls remain a common cause of injury at work.
It was revealed by Chris Budd, European Sales Director at Watco that over a third of FMs (37 per cent) have been affected by slips, trips and falls in the last year. Alongside this, a lack of employee awareness and inadequate time for repairs had also had a negative impact on safety.
The panel, which comprised Phil Pinnington, Head of Audit & Consultancy at the British Safety Council, Nick Bray, Head of HSEQ, ISS UK and Ireland and Jenni Gallop, Director of Estates and Facilities (including health and safety), Provide Community shared some invaluable tips on how to maintain safety with FMJ Editor Sara Bean.
This included insights from Nick Bray on how ISS is dealing with allergens in catering – a growing concern for many foodservice providers, while Phil Pinnington described how the BSC is working hard to ensure that health and safety is seen as more than a compliance issue but a crucial part of the Government’s plans for economic growth.
For the healthcare perspective Jenni Gallop was on hand to explain the special care taken when managing workers who often work alone and at unsociable hours.
The panel concluded that health and safety being a core remit of facilities management it is more important than ever to ensure all stakeholders, whether workers or leadership teams are encouraged to see safety as everyone’s responsibility in meeting ESG goals.
