FMs too narrowly focused targets to meet sustainable goals

A survey carried out earlier this year by Biological Preparations in partnership with FMJ on the sustainability priorities and challenges for FM leaders reveals that while over half (51 per cent) report on Scope 1 and 2 emissions, under a quarter (24 per cent) include Scope 3 emissions.

This inward focus is influenced by UK legislation, such as the SECR framework (The Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting Regulation) and the Environmental Act 2021.

The data found that organisations are largely focused on their own direct environmental impact, with less attention given to the sustainability of their entire value chain. Said James Patterson CEO Biological Preparations: “To lead in sustainability, FMs must look beyond immediate targets and consider the entire lifecycle of their entire operations.”

The survey also found that just one per cent of respondents communicate with their suppliers on ways to foster sustainability within the supply chain, representing a missed opportunity for businesses to build stronger relationships.

With 38 per cent of respondents citing cost as the primary barrier to sustainability—more than double the next biggest challenge, accurate tracking (15 per cent) the report advises that sustainable options can offer better ROI and productivity gains when viewed holistically. For instance, eco-products that utilise residual cleaning can improve productivity, and less harsh chemicals can better protect assets.

The fact that just 19 per cent of respondents communicate with clients on their sustainability goals suggests FMs are missing the opportunity to engage with suppliers and stakeholders. Clear communication of sustainability goals across the supply chain is vital for aligning efforts and driving real progress.

A feature based on the results of the report will be published in the November issue of FMJ.
