Six interns from the 10,000 Black Interns programme are spending six weeks in paid roles at EMCOR UK in departments including HR, finance, IT, legal and marketing.
10,000 Black Interns is run by the 10,000 Interns Foundation and gives black and ethnic minority students and graduates an opportunity to gain experience and kickstart their careers. More than 700 companies pledged internships during the last cycle and the foundation has created 5,000 paid internship opportunities since 2020.
This is the first time that EMCOR UK has engaged with the programme, after it was discussed at one of its ‘Creating Balance’ focus groups. The six interns each applied to the programme before going through an interview process with EMCOR UK.
The six-week placement kicked off with an induction programme designed by the EMCOR UK Learning and Development team where they were welcomed by CEO Cheryl McCall and hiring managers. They will be mentored by Apprenticeship Manager Natalie Henderson and Learning and Development Business Partner Jaclyn Lartey, and will receive talks from different EMCOR UK employees throughout the programme.
They will also take part in a personal branding workshop, receive interview support and networking guidance, before a graduation event at the end of the programme.
Caroline Joy, Head of Learning and Development at EMCOR UK, said: “The 10,000 Black Interns programme does a fantastic job at helping talented people find opportunities that they might otherwise miss out on. We are committed to creating and supporting a diverse workforce and this programme supports those ambitions. We’ll be keen to explore future opportunities with the interns if both parties are interested, and at the very least we hope to showcase the FM sector and give them a great experience to take forward for the next stage in their careers.”
