Pump station maintenance: Keeping your customers’ doors open 24/7/365

Hundreds of thousands of sewage and stormwater pumps are installed across the UK, designed to draw wastewater away from properties and stormwater away from roads when heavy rain and flash flooding occur. Often found underneath big shopping centres, business parks or supermarkets, their role is to keep water and waste flowing and ensure premises remain operational.

You may not know if there is a pump in place at the properties you manage or when it was last serviced. But, if there are facilities below ground, the chances are there is a pump on-site – and it will need regular maintenance to ensure there’s no disruption to everyday business.

Time to take action

Without regular maintenance in place, neglected pumps – just like drains – can unexpectedly break down, leading to overflowing waste, the closing down of facilities, and potentially loss of revenue from site closures.

At Metro Rod, we provide customers with a Pump Maintenance Plan which keeps your pump station in optimal working order, preventing disruption for you and your customers and driving cost savings. Plus, Metro Rod provides you with a single point of contact for all water in, waste out maintenance, helping you to consolidate your supply chain and save you precious time, money, and sleepless nights.

How do pumps work?

  • Wastewater drains away through the drainage pipes and enters a chamber within the pump station, which contains a float
  • As the chamber fills and reaches capacity, the float acts as a switch and triggers the pump
  • The pump will automatically start up, creating pressure that pushes the wastewater through the pump station and into the discharge pipe, moving it to the main sewer pipes.

How can a Pump Maintenance Plan help the properties you manage?

Just like a service on your car or boiler, a Pump Maintenance Plan is essential to ensure your pump station runs smoothly, without disruption. It can help extend the life of the pump, prevent unexpected failures and reduce the risk of site closures.

Throughout the year, we’ll service your pump so we can spot and conduct any work necessary to prevent potential failure of your system before it occurs. Depending on your needs, we’ll visit quarterly, six-monthly or annually, helping to reduce the costs of emergency call outs when failure occurs.
