Work gets underway for Equans on major decarbonisation programme

Equans has embarked on the delivery of a major decarbonisation programme for hundreds of social housing properties in Hertfordshire.

Delivering the retrofit works on behalf of Sovereign Network Group (SNG), the programme will improve the energy efficiency of 372 social housing properties across the county, whilst helping to tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions for residents.

The programme has been boosted by £5 million from Wave 2 of the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund – now known as the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund and will be completed ahead of the September 2025 deadline for using the funds.

Equans first partnered with SNG in 2024 on a pilot retrofit project, taking 10 properties from SNG’s housing stock in the London Borough of Brent, delivering a micro programme to decarbonise them. This has now been scaled up into a full programme that will deliver tangible benefits for hundreds of households, and support SNG to tackle fuel poverty and climate change.

A comprehensive programme of works will be delivered by Equans, including loft and cavity wall insulation, new windows and doors, solar panels and new internal fans, among other key measures. SNG has carefully selected the homes across its Hertfordshire portfolio that are most in need of upgrades. Many are currently graded EPC rating D or E, leaving tenants at risk of fuel poverty. The new measures will ensure all 372 homes will be brought up to a minimum of EPC C, making the homes warmer and more energy, and cost efficient.

Rob Young, Regional Managing Director at Equans UK & Ireland said:We’re proud to see that our pilot project is now translating into a solid route to decarbonising SNG’s housing stock.  We have worked incredibly closely with their team to build, and now deliver, a programme that will be costand time-effective, provide minimum disruption to residents and most importantly – deliver life-changing results, which will enhance lives.”

Patrick Flynn, Property Services Director for Sovereign Network Group – London andHertfordshire commented: “We’re pleased to be working with Equans to deliver this important retrofit work to homes in Hertfordshire. The project very much aligns with our purpose to provide good, affordable homes: the foundation for a better life and will result in healthier homes and happier customers using less energy.”
