‘We’re in it together’ is the new mantra to help us
get through the Covid-19 crisis, as this month’s
issue shows, the contribution made by FM in the
UK’s battle to beat the virus is incalculable.
From the supermarkets that must stay open to feed the
country to the healthcare facilities being ramped up to
care for those badly stricken with the disease, facilities
managers have been ready and willing to lend their
expertise.
As we went to press, facilities provider ISS announced it was
to deliver cleaning, portering, waste management and other
‘so ’ FM services at the new Nightingale hospital based at
the ExCeL conference centre in East London. In this month’s
FM Clinic we hear from the MD of ISS Healthcare Chris Ash
on ways to ensure levels of cleanliness are maintained in
such a high risk environment to reduce the level of cross
contamination. FM’s are also charged with ensuring the health
and wellbeing of the hundreds of thousands of people who are
working from home, and our compliance page this month has
a useful primer on caring for home workers.
Many of our commercial buildings may have shut up shop for
the duration, but the FMs who run them are still working hard
to maintain them. Take Alan Epps, an Operational Director
for Integral who, with a team of 20 is looking a er a building
intended for 5,000 inhabitants to ensure that critical services
such as plumbing as well as the building’s general appearance
is maintained, the building is then able to be up and running
when people are allowed back to work.
Whatever happens over the coming weeks, here’s hoping
that the government and the wider business community
acknowledge something that those of us who have covered
FM for many years are well aware. FM runs through the fabric
of our society and was ready and able to meet the greatest
challenge to our society since the second world war.
As always, we’d welcome your feedback about any aspect of the
magazine, together with your insight into what’s happening in the
FM sector.
